Warren error! Tractor driver accidentally digs baby bunnies out of their underground home

A group of baby bunnies had a lucky escape, just in time for Easter after they were dug
out of their warren by accident.

Christine Nixon, 51, came to the rescue when the bundle of eight tiny rabbits after her son Andrew unwittingly scooped them out as he moved tonnes of soil at the family's haulage plant.

Fortunately, the 27-year-old spotted something moving and found the bunnies trying to burrow their way out.

He sifted through tonnes of dirt to ensure they were all saved.

The litter are now being looked after by Christine, of Winston, near Barnard
Castle, County Durham.

Mrs Nixon said: 'Andrew dropped the soil into the wagon and saw something
moving.

'When he went over to look he found a baby rabbit on the soil and then we
spotted that the soil was still moving.

'He went to investigate, seven more struggled through to the surface. He brought them into me and they’re absolutely gorgeous. I think they’re about two-and-a-half weeks old.'

Mrs Nixon, who runs Nixon Haulage with her husband, David, first fed the
rabbits with goats’ milk from a syringe and they are now on a diet of grass and
dandelion leaves.

She said: 'When I came to feed them for the first time I was really frightened
that they wouldn’t feed.

'They were so vulnerable - the size of a small hamster with no fur. They hadn't
even opened their eyes.

'We had unwittingly destroyed their home, and I knew they were depending on me,
so I was very nervous that I wouldn't be able to care for them.

'To begin with, all eight were feeding every three hours. But I didn't mind
getting up to feed them through the night - I just wanted to make sure they
were OK.'

And Mrs Nixon has already used her mothering instinct to pick out the bunnies' personalities, naming them accordingly.

She said: 'They look identical, but we can tell them apart when we're feeding them as
they all have different personalities when they feed and sleep.

'We've got Greedy, Messy, Dopey, Sneezy, Dribbly and Meerkat so far.

'But I don't want to get too attached to them as they are not meant to be pets,
I will have to release them back into the wild.

'I'm being very strict and not allowing myself to cuddle them, although they
are very snuggly and so cute.

'As soon as they get sleepy after their feed, they just want to curl up with
you. It's adorable.'

She added: 'My grandchildren, Bethany, nine, Matthew, four, and Owen, two-and-a-half,
come round to see the rabbits now instead of coming to visit me!

'I'm so glad that we were able to save them just in time for Easter. It has
made the break all the more special for us.

'It will be a good few weeks before I can release them into the wild again - I
hope that they stay around this area. I will be heartbroken to see them go.'

The four-month-old cub stunned zoo keepers when he started to play with the blue bucket for hours on end.

But he has become attached to it in more than one way - he keeps getting his head stuck inside then falling over.

Augo's antics have amused hundreds of visitors who have been flocking to see the tiny bear at the Aalborg Zoo in Denmark.

He pokes his head in the container and attempts to stand on two legs, before, inevitably, falling over - all with caring mother Malik looking on.

The startled young bear then returns to the safety of his protective mum. But before long, he is playing with his favourite bucket again, and it's not long before he's stuck again.

However, Zuckerberg appears to be struggling to toilet train Beast, who had an accident at the launch of the Facebook data centre, in Pineville, Oregon, last Friday.

The web designer was left to clean up a puddle in the office.

Zuckerberg even posted the pictures on the dog's very own Facebook page with an accompanying caption.

'Mark took me to see Facebook's new data centre, and I christened it by peeing on the floor. That puddle at the bottom left is all me,' it said.

The reclusive Facebook founder rarely gives any glimpse of his private life, despite the fact he has the private lives of millions of people at his fingertips.

His dog, a Hungarian Puli called Beast, is a Facebook user and already has more than 97,426 'likes'.

On his profile it he is described as a 'public figure who likes cuddling, loving and eating'.

Zuckerberg is seen in various poses cuddling the dog at what appears to be his Californian home.

Many people have already commented on the album, most of whom are Hungarian and seemingly pleased that he has chosen a dog from their country.

Boxing matches are usually only held to settle disputes between female deer, but this stag challenged the doe after she chased him away from her youngster. He may have regretted getting confrontational after the feisty female delivered a shower of blows that forced him to back down.

Baylor and Tupelo are certainly making a splash at Houston Zoo right now.

The baby elephants, who weigh 1,100lbs and 600lbs respectively, have been given a new 120in family-size pool to paddle around in together after outgrowing their small inflatable one.

Zoo keepers have upgraded ten-month-old Baylor and five-month-old Tupelo to the bigger pool as warmer weather approaches in Texas and they need to cool down in rising temperatures.

In a video posted by zoo keepers, the two elephants have great fun in the blue and white pool with Tupelo leaning on it and then hilariously falling in.

‘The small, inflatable pools do not last longer than five minutes without getting popped,’ Houston Zoo elephant keeper Mandy Rinker said.

‘Baylor and Tupelo (need) a much bigger kiddie pool to play in. Playing in the pool is a fun enrichment activity for the babies and it is given to them when the weather allows.

But the elephant calves are bathed every day at 10am in a ‘Meet the Keeper’ session.

They weighed only 250lbs at birth but have grown fast in a short time, with zoo keepers writing a ‘Trunk Tales’ blog to document their first steps and playtime antics.

As the elephants have been growing up they have been eating a variety of food, with Baylor said to be enjoying carrots, sweet potatoes and hay.

Tupelo is learning to use her trunk to feed herself and likes munching on chopped produce and hay, as well as the adult elephants’ faeces, which zookepers say is quite normal.

Adult faeces provide calves with good bacteria in their bodies to help them digest food.

Daryl Hoffman, Houston Zoo large mammals curator, said: ‘These two bulls have had a great relationship since the day they met.

‘It is good to have young elephants together, so that they can spar, play and burn some energy.’

Baylor was given his name from the Baylor College of Medicine, which has been heavily involved in elephant herpes research in recent years.

Tupelo was given a name beginning with ‘T’ after her parents, Tess and Thai. Tupelo was named after Van Morrison’s song Tupelo Honey - a favourite of the elephant team.

Only surviving swan shot by sniper in Somerset slaughter finds a lovebird

A swan who survived after being shot in a mass slaughter of birds on the Somerset Levels earlier this year has found love.

Within hours of being released into a private lake, the female swan, named Solo, found a mate on the water.

The bird was nursed back to health by Secret World Wildlife Rescue in Somerset before being given a new home in the wild at a secret location and now appears to be in good health after several weeks of recovery.

Solo is the sole survivor of a month-long airgun killing spree that left over forty of the majestic animals dead.

She was found lying wounded with eight dead swans, shot in the head with airgun pellets, in a field outside Blackford in the Wedmore area of Somerset at the end of January.

Further carcasses were found in nearby Westham and Godney.

This loyal spaniel saved the life of his injured friend who was barely moving by sticking by his side following the tsunami - and leading a group of rescuers to him.

In heartwarming footage, the brown and white dog leads reporters to the injured mud-splattered animal who is lying flat out among the wreckage.

The dog had seemingly stuck by the side of the wounded animal in Arahama, Sendai, for days following the earthquake and tsunami.

TV crews who were filming in the area initially thought the spaniel was guarding a dead dog, before they excitedly realised the injured animal was alive and being protected.

The dog was later rushed to the vets in Mito, while the loyal dog was taken to a nearby shelter.

The crews thought the white dog was dead but shout excitedly 'Yes! Yes! He is alive' as they spot his head moving.

The crews were shocked to discover that the apparently dead dog has survived.

'He has a collar. He must be someone's pet. He has a silver collar. He is shaking. He seems very afraid.

'Oh, there is another dog. I wonder if he is dead.'

Another person off camera asks: 'Where?'

The reporter continues: 'Right there. There is another dog right next to the one sitting down. He is not moving. I wonder. I wonder if he is alright.'

Protector: After barking at reporters, the dog returns to his fellow canine's side

The voice off-camera says: 'The dog is protecting him,' with the reporter replying: 'Yes. He is protecting the dog. That is why he did not want us to approach them. He was trying to keep us at bay.

'I can't watch this. This is very difficult to watch. Oh. Look. He is moving. He is alive. I am so happy to see that he is alive.

'Yes! Yes! He is alive. He looks to be weakened. We need them to be rescued soon. We really want them rescued soon.

'Oh good. He's getting up. It is amazing how they survived the tremendous earthquake and tsunami. It's just amazing that they survived through this all.'

Miracle: The weaker dog begins to stir and his friend puts a comforting paw around him

Both dogs have now been rescued, according to a Facebook post by Kenn Sakurai, president of a dog and cat food firm which aids animal rescue operations.

'The one which came close to the camera is in the better condition,' he explained.

'The othere white, gray and black was weak. So it is in the vet clinic in Ibaraki Prefectre.The other dog is in the shelter of the same area.

'But please know that those two are just the tip of the iceberg. There are more and we need help.'

Gazing adoringly at the camera, four-year-old Hania feeds her puppies around the clock to ensure they don't go hungry.

The tiny pups, pictured at only three-days old, have to scramble and fight one another off to make sure they get their fair share of milk.

And to make sure none of them are left without food their breeder, Gabriela Kubalska, helps to nurse the litter and has drafted in the help of another female Great Dane.

Their exhausted mother and the brood take up the entire ground floor of their owner's house which is located in Warsaw, Poland.

The whimpering pedigree pups, eight male and nine female, were born by Cesarean section at a veterinary clinic near their home.

Ms Kubalska decided to spare her prized pedigree dog the pain of a long labour - especially since this is her first litter.

A Rhodesian Ridgeback in Germany also hit the headlines last September when she also gave birth to 17 puppies.

Flamingos are famed for their ability to stand on one leg for hours at a time.

But for one clumsy bird his balance escaped him and he was left in an undignified heap after taking a tumble as he went for a quick paddle.

Strolling through the shallow pool in his enclosure at Moscow Zoo, the flamingo goes to dip his head under the water to cool off.

But, with his head well and truly submerged, he loses his footing and plunges head over feet into the water.

As he desperately splashes about, the confused bird begins to do somersaults with his legs wildly flailing in all directions.

After flipping over several times and almost sinking, the flamingo eventually manages to regain his composure and casually swims away as if nothing has happened.

The hilarious moment was captured by bemused photographer Tatiana Adamenko.

She said: 'I was just taking some shots of the flamingo taking a dip when he just fell over.

'They are usually very graceful birds but this one was panicking and creating a lot of noise.

'He was very joyful one minute and the next he was turning somersaults in water trying to get back on his feet.

'Everyone at the zoo found it very funny, but the flamingo didn't. Luckily the water was not deep.'

Ms Adamenko, from Podolsk, near Moscow, has been taking pictures of wildlife for three years after qualifying as a vet.

She added: 'Flamingos are very unusual birds. They are distinctive not only with their beauty but also their unusual behaviour - that's why I love watching them.

'I know that Kazakh people believe that the first person to see a flamingo in spring will be happy. So I'm hoping to be the first this spring.'

With its head stuck through a windscreen after being hit by a truck at 60mph, nobody gave the young bald eagle much of a chance of survival.

But the bird nicknamed Wiegle - short for 'Window Eagle' - has made a miraculous recovery and is flying high again in the wilds of Bear Lake, Idaho.

The eagle's battle for life began after it was hit while feeding on a dead deer on the road and flew in the wrong direction as the semi approached.

Amazingly the young female suffered no broken bones, but had internal bleeding. First it was taken to Idaho Fish and Game in Pocatello before being driven toTeton Raptor Center in Wilson, Wyoming.

There it was nursed back to health for a month before Wiegle proved she was ready to be released as she flew, ate on her own, and was able to navigate and land.

Finally, she was released back to her Bear Lake home.

Teton Director Amy Brennan McCarthey said: 'This return to the wild qualifies as the most remarkable among our success stories.

'We are very proud to play a role in giving this eagle a second chance at freedom.'

Monkeying about with a Merc: Zoo gives cheeky inmates given their own car to play with after being forced to ban vehicles

The sight of a team of vandals stripping a car and running off with its parts would normally spark fury - but these scenes of Longleat Safari Park were being actively encouraged today.

The 100 rhesus monkeys were treated to a tattered old Mercedes by staff following a two-year hiatus in which no cars were allowed into their enclosure.

Following redevelopment of the park in Wiltshire, staff decided to give the monkeys their own battered old vehicle to let them take out their frustrations before daring to allow paying visitors to risk driving through it.

The scamps even made an attempt to wrench the iconic Mercedes badge off the car's bonnet.

Ian Turner, deputy head warden, said: 'The monkeys are one of our key attractions.

'Their antics were the perfect preparation for the reopening of the Monkey Jungle at Longleat this weekend.

'They have created fond memories for thousands of children over the years and probably the same number of frustrating memories for mums and dads.

'But having not had any visiting cars coming through their enclosure for so long they've got a lot pent up frustration to get out of their system.

'It's clear to see from our test run however, that mischief is still very much in the front of their minds and they haven't forgotten their fondness for cars.'

On a busy day up to 2,000 cars drive through the monkey enclosure at Longleat.

Rhesus macaque monkeys are found throughout south east Asia and across the Indian sub-continent.

In some parts of India they are believed to be sacred and have lived in close contact with humans for centuries.
